London, England

TEPD offers an international student teaching experience in northern London during the 2nd 8 weeks of the fall semester. TEPD provides this experience in the Enfield borough of London. Students leave for London the Saturday after completing their 1st 8 weeks of student teaching in Michigan (mid-October) and return about the 3rd week of December. Students are accompanied by a TEPD faculty member who is an experienced student teaching coordinator.
Enfield is London's northernmost borough with a population near 300,000. Students can easily take advantage of the many cultural experiences awaiting them via readily available public transportation. Several group trips will be scheduled and may include the London Theater, museums such as the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, and a bus tour of London.
Program Mission:
- Student teaching in a foreign country can stimulate a student's growth in academic competence. The field placement builds on an initial eight weeks of student teaching in Michigan and provides continuity and support in preparing teachers for multicultural classrooms.
- International experiences further develop each student’s personal and international philosophies. Students develop both and understanding of another culture and an increased ability to make comparative decisions and judgments in new situations.
- These experiences expand students' international understanding and prepare them for intelligent participation in society.
Costs and Financial Aid:
- In addition to regular tuition, students also need to budget for personal spending money, cost of living accommodations, field trips, health insurance, airfare, meals, passport and administrative fees. Costs will vary from year to year depending on airfare, value of the dollar, etc. Costs are estimated at about $5000 for the Fall 2006 experience.
- Financial aid provided by CMU may be applied toward the cost of this program. It is also possible to apply for aid based on the program's additional cost. Students are encouraged to apply for the various available scholarships both through TEPD and CMU. Click here for TEPD scholarship information and click here for OIE scholarships for study abroad.
Accommodations: Room and board are provided by an English family in Enfield. The expense is included in the overall cost of the program. TEPD supervising faculty will work closely with an English program coordinator to assure appropriate housing placements.
Expectations of Students: Students must participate in a series of weekend seminars in preparation for departure to London. Parents and family are encouraged to attend one of the meetings. The final decision for acceptance into the overseas program will be made by the Director of Student Teaching and the university coordinator accompanying students to Enfield.
While studying in Enfield, student teachers will have the opportunity to observe different school organizations and methods of teaching subject matter, learn to work effectively with people in unfamiliar situations, develop tolerance and self-confidence, and through their housing placements, experience learning in Enfield in greater depth than a typical travel/study course.
Applications: Three applications are required.
- A TEPD Student Teaching Application.
- An International Student Teaching Application.
- An Office of International Education application.
