March 18, 2008 -
Woke up early and went to breakfast with Bernadette.  Bernadette and Victorio took off to drive to Sabana de la Mar to meet us there with the vehicles.  On the way they heard that there was a high wave warning for the area which might ground the ferry.  They turned back to make sure the ferry was going to run today.  After an hour wait they found that the ferries would run.

We checked out of the hotel and were met by Anna Jackson who provided taxi service to the ferry.  We were half an hour early so we took in the market across the street from the ferry.

At 10:55 we loaded on to our ferry the “mas o Menos”  (more or less).

The normally 45 minute ride took about an hour and 10 minutes.  Our trip was marred by a tiny baby that really got seasick.  Because of the resulting smell several others also got sick.  When we arrived at Sabana de la Mar, we anchored about 200 yards from the dock and were met by a smaller boat with an outboard motor.  About two thirds of the passengers transferred to the other boat (including all of the crew), and the smaller boat headed for the dock.

After unloading the passengers the smaller boat returned to pick us up and to pick up a new motorcycle that we helped to load.  We were able to disembark after we helped up load the motorcycle.  Because Bernadette was so late, she had made arrangements for a van to pick us up and drop us off at the hotel.

The hotel is very unusual in that it is build on two rivers coming down the mountain side.  You can hear the water from your room and in the other building the water flows directly through your room.

When we arrived we were surprised to see Kristin’s supervising teacher along with two other teachers we knew.

By 2pm, and we were all starving.  We ordered lunch and made arrangements with the management to tour the Haitises National Park.  This park included two caves with pictographs.

After returning to the hotel we talked and played cards until dinner was served about 7:30pm.  After dinner the group played cards and dominoes and tried to find places on the hotel grounds where their cell phones worked.  It is now 10pm.  I believe that tonight will be an early night for all of us.
