Cohort Registration
All students who are admitted to CMU's Teacher Education Program follow the prescribed series of classes, known as cohort classes, based on the certification they are seeking. The sequencing of these classes into two semesters allows students to meet prerequisites for the classes and to complete the courses in as little time as possible. Initial Cohort Registration will begin after students are notified electronically by the Center for Student Services (CSS) of their admission to the Teacher Education Program. A link to the Cohort Registration process will be included in that email. Students will need to have a CMU Teacher Education Photo ID prior to beginning their midtier experience.
Cohort schedules are developed with the intent of meeting the needs of the greatest number of students. Work schedules, needs of commuter students, etc., are taken into consideration when planning the cohort schedule. Students are not required to take courses in the next two semesters after admission. However, If you choose to defer enrollment you should contact the TEPD office immediately to make arrangements for future cohort classes.
Generally, cohort classes are not available in the summer although the department does offer study abroad mid-tier experiences (EDU 361 and EDU 493) for Elementary Education students available in the summer for students to travel to Oaxaca, Mexico or London, England. Announcements will be made via email when opportunities become available.
Students interested in receiving K-12 certification usually take Secondary cohorts but students should meet with their instructors if not sure.
Students with a Special Education Major will be certified either as an elementary or secondary teacher with a special education endorsement. Therefore, if you are majoring in elementary cognitive or emotionally impaired special education, follow the elementary cohorts. And likewise, if you are majoring in secondary cognitive or emotionally impaired special education, follow the secondary cohorts. For more specific information, please contact the Counseling and Special Education Department at 989-774-3204.
