Department Mission Statement

The mission of the department is to establish and offer distinctive academic programs designed to prepare quality graduates and encourage state and nationally recognized scholarship and service.

Faculty earnestly and consistently strive for:

PRIORITY FOCUS ON STUDENTS AS LEARNERS AND PROFESSIONAL COLLEAGUES

Student achievement is realized only through a partner relationship and a supportive and collaborative involvement with faculty.

Graduates will be recognized by the educational community, state constituencies, and alumni groups as the highest quality in the state. Yearly input will be sought from Michigan superintendents concerning the quality of the department's graduates.

DISTINCTION IN RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

Research and scholarship distinction by faculty and students is a measure of the department's ability to compete at the university, state, and national levels.

Collectively, the faculty will present a yearly portfolio of state and national scholarship, professional activities and collegial presentations.

EXCELLENCE IN PROGRAM DESIGN AND DELIVERY

Selective offerings of academic programs will reflect the opportunities of our educational community and the strength of our department.

A fundamental purpose of this department is to achieve recognized excellence in the design and delivery of all offered academic programs. Yearly input will be sought from Michigan's superintendents concerning the department's programs.

DISTINCTION IN SERVICE TO THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY

In order to distinguish the department as a powerful service provider, departmental faculty must be visible and recognized as contributing members of our educational community at the state and national levels.

Collectively, the faculty will present a yearly portfolio of state and national service to the educational community.

ENLARGEMENT OF RESOURCES FOR DEPARTMENT SUPPORT

Since the excellence is worth the cost, the acquisition of sufficient professional resources within the department is essential for our success.

Professional grants, constituent support, student funding, and university development activities are valued, encouraged and rewarded by the department.
