Since its founding in 1892, Central Michigan University has been a leader in the field of teacher education. The teacher education program prepares students for the multiple roles of classroom teacher, school team member, community leader, and education advocate.

  • CMU was the first university in the state to implement education programs fulfilling No Child Left Behind requirements.
  • Norma Bailey was named the 2007 Michigan Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
  • The Michigan Department of Education granted CMU “Exemplary Performance” for its teacher education program – the highest rating from the state for teacher preparation programs.
  • CMU is the only institution to incorporate the Michigan Literacy Progress Program (MLPP) certification modules into its elementary reading curriculum while also offering a single class for MLPP certification to students who are not planning to minor in reading.
  • TEPD was the first institution in the state of Michigan to offer a middle level endorsement.
